The quality regeneration scheme of Blyth Market Place in Northumberland is the setting for Simon Watkinson’s Hyperscope an integrated architectural and lighting artwork, commissioned by Inspire Northumberland that provides a powerful focal point to the design of this beautiful and spacious new square.

Hyperscope is part of a series of artworks situated in North East England that has seen Simon Watkinson identify how the heritage of certain areas is literally ‘beneath our feet’. The installation highlights the coastal town’s rich industrial heritage and forthright regeneration ambitions drawing strongly from the legacy of its shipbuilding and coal mining past including when the Royal Navy used the Port of Blyth to dock their submarines during World War II.

“Inspire Northumberland involves artists at the beginning of the design process to develop innovative projects. In Blyth we wanted to make a high quality and special space for the new Market Square and by involving artist Simon Watkinson as part of the design team we have delivered a stunning light sculpture which draws meaning from Blyth’s heritage and celebrates Blyth as a forward looking 21st Century town”
Wendy Scott of Inspire Northumberland.

“This exciting art work reflects the vision we have for Blyth town centre providing the right balance between, past, present and future. We hope that it will have a dramatic impact and further enhance our beautifully renovated marketplace.”
Councillor Grant Davey, Blyth Valley Borough Council
